THE GAP
Transparency:
The advancement of technology has completely altered the ways in which Generation Z has grown up in comparison to our parents. In that sense, it has become increasingly difficult for us to connect and relate (especially regarding mental health issues related to technology), differing our communication and creating one of the biggest divides in history between the two generations.
Opportunity:
We saw the opportunity to bridge the gap between parents are the younger generation.
Strategy:
Create installations containing a piece from the older generation and how it has evolved in the newer generation to highlight the substantial differences in the ways that we grew up
Transformation:
Open conversation and release tensions between Generation Z and our parents through reflecting on our disparate upbringings and using this new sense of awareness to approach our conflicts and opposing beliefs from a place of empathy and understanding on both sides
My Role:
As the leader of the cyberbullying team, I created an installation containing an old phone and a message recording system filled with hateful messages to represent "cyberbullying" in our parents' generation. To represent cyberbullying in Generation Z, I created a walk-in space plastered with ridiculing comments, with each wall displaying a different social media platform, including text message, Instagram, and Twitter. I used flashing lights to replicate the lighting up of a phone when one receives a text message along with a small confined space and loud repeated text message dings to replicate the immense overwhelming and often times inescapable feeling of being cyberbullied.
